I think it depends on the type of tortoise and the environment they come from ….. I think those huge island tortoises are "predator naïve" , as are many animals that have evolved in environments that lack predators ……… many wild animals are tolerant of people touching them if they are "predator naïve" ……. i'd guess some of it is genetic and some is learned ………..

Yes, my Indian stars are much more predator naive. Which is a wise adaptation strategy given their size. I think the brazeness of the ploughshares is something that has caused them to go extinct in the wild so quickly.
