Hi everyone :)

I brought my little 1 year old horsefield tortoise Sampson home on Friday and I'm just wondering what "normal" tortoise behaviour is? What should he be doing throughout the day and how much should he be sleeping etc? Just not very sure as I've never had a tortoise before and want to make sure he's happy.

Thanks
Kirsty

Well...normal, hum-m...

Baby tortoises (and at 1 year of age I would say yours is still a baby) hide a lot. They are prey, and stay out of sight for safety. So you may see him sleeping in the hiding place quite a bit.

What I do is take them out in the morning, set them in a little tub of warm water (not too deep), and while they're soaking, I'll fix their food and place it near the mouth of the hiding place. Then after about 15 minutes, I'll put the babies by the food and quickly step out of sight.

As the tortoise grows and gets more confidence, you can move the food away from the mouth of the hiding place so he has to wander to look for it.
