Went out to open my leopard box this morning, and was greeted by this huge marmmot, or Rock Chuck. Whatever you call it. It has to go. My husband is sure it is not a threat to my tortoises. Does everyone agree? He is getting traps today. Will try to regime the critter. Far far away from my enclosures.0630160819.jpg
It looks smaller than it is. Was as big as my cat. 12 to 15 pounds I would guess.

BTW huge is relative. I have woodchucks here 4 to 5 times that big. True story:

I had one digging under my outbuildings. I had it in the pellet gun scope when movement near it distracted me. Was a baby woodchuck. Being humane, I let her alone. The very next day, I came home and my FULL 500 gallon LP tank was sunk in on one side. The woodchuck dug out under the block holding the one side up. I got a crane truck and lifted it, there was a very flat woodchuck. Moral of the story: NO MERCY!

They are like ground squirrels , or prairie dogs . I think the worst problem might be that they are "social" type critters , and more than one might move in !
