No plans yet. I’ve just joined to get as much information as possible. I’ll be lurking for awhile but would love suggestions and recommendations for a first tortoise. I’m determined to do it right. I know Russians seem to be the standard starter tortoise but I’d like something a little flashier than that. Thank you!

Matt from Long Island, New York.

Welcome to the forum! Russians are a great first tortoise, but if you have the room, I'd recommend a Redfoot. They are so personable and friendly. I have 7 of them, and with the exception of one that is a bit of a terror, they are all as friendly as can be. They eat out of my hand, come running when they hear my voice and love attention. They are definitely larger than a Russian, and need different environments as well....but it might be worth checking them out. I have pics of mine on my media page if you'd like to check them out.

Welcome Matt,. I'm on the island as well. I would recommend a Greek or Hermann's.
