I'm considering an outdoor enclosure on my apartment balcony for my Russian Tortoises. I've put them out there in a rubbermaid tub a couple times using coconut coir substrate but in direct sunlight the substrate quickly heats up to about 120 degrees. I'm thinking of using a large planter box for the time being but I'm wondering what substrate I should be using.

Any suggestions?

You can try mixing plain dirt with your coco coir and see if that help hold the moisture...

I planted tortoise grass in my outdoor enclosure using only organic soil, and then put cypress mulch in their hides. Good luck!
