Hi everyone. We are adopting my cousins 16yo sulcata and will be building him and outdoor enclosure in FL. What do you recommend for a substrate? Any info would be greatly appreciated. :D

Hey! Congrats on your adoption!

I'd recommend planting a variety of different grasses, weeds, flowers, etc. that are all edible to Sulcatas. It's outdoors and he's pretty big, he could just graze all day! You can find lists pretty easily by googling. I'm sure such lists are easy to find on this site, too, haha.

If you do this, though, perhaps leave a dirt spot for him to dig in, if you are okay with that.

Also, I would try to mimic some of the positive parts of where he use to live at if he is 16 and healthy.

That aside, you would want to imitate his natural environment as much as possible. Here is a website for edible plants you would probably want on his outdoor enclosure. Www.thetortoisetable.org.uk

Thank you all for the info. Sorry I didn't reply sooner but
I have been going crazy packing and yes spending lots of
time with Shrek. I love him sooooo much already, especially
when he grunts. Lol
