Hello everyone. I just was lucky enough to acquire a beautiful 4 month old painted River terrapin. Anyone have any experience with these “little” guys. Regarding food, I have read a lot of breeders use mazuri Tortoise chow as this is low on protein and high in fiber (which these guys need). Obviously I will only use this as a supplement (if ok). Any advice regarding feeding young River terrapins would be greatly appreciated. Here are a few pics of the little dude. 28C02B51-8D6A-4FBB-BAD9-FA514B5217BA.png8B6AE27D-92D0-4C88-9213-042C8E7DC3A3.png9E52C45A-BA3E-434B-BC50-795702466CF1.jpeg02F2D0F9-9D93-463A-AE5D-B0D9C08BB57E.png54E37559-02F9-422C-8FDF-5A0292141BBA.jpegC8D29263-2F48-4AFB-A114-AD8F96F7C36A.jpeg3D9900DE-2C18-43BC-B5A5-E85B7875F820.jpegCB688B2C-4BAC-4DE1-9635-D0A2DD8A780B.jpeg

Mazuri turtle works great. Don’t be too concerned with the protein amounts really. They will eat fish as well when young. I’m on around 12-14 rearing going. Some are close to laying size now actually. They gradually will not eat or rather opportunistically be offered
Fish as they get older. They love cactus, and hibiscus flowers, cucumber and go nuts over papaya. You can also get the algae wafers. Fun turtles. They’re great as adults too.

@tortadise thank you for the info. I will try papaya and cucumber. Would love to see some pics of your “army”. Everyone else thank you for the kind words as well.
Absolutely. I just got a new phone so don’t have any in this one. I’ll get some. Of the affinis as well. Same diet for that species too. Cactus is also a favorite.

You guys are very lucky. They are on my bucket list but I fear like most everything else there will never be any 3rd gen captive breds available on the market here in Indonesia (required for the permit). I might need to import them from America, which would be ironic. Incidentally someone was getting one microchipped while I was having my torts done the other day. He had another enormous River turtle too, both lovingly stuffed into rice sacks.
