Homopus areolatus Does anyone here own this species and if no why? It's a cool looking species.

I just found out it is also called a padloper so thats probably why no one has one. Just to answer my own question. DOH!

I'm sure there are some still in the country, but not many. Not very many have been legally exported from South Africa to the US and none for the last 10 to 15 years.
They have been bred in the US, but not sure if anyone is still doing it now. I'm sure there are some in private hands and some here http://chelonianconservation.org/our-work/species-list. They haven't bred theirs as of yet.
The last time I saw any for sale it was a male and $3,500. I don't think he got that much for him though. :p About 15 years ago you could find them for $800 ea. and about 22 years ago I saw some for $200 ea. :)
So it would be near impossible and very expensive if you ever did see one for sale.

Thanks Danny. I have an old reptile book and there is a picture of one. If the picture is right they look like they have some beautiful colors showing on their carapace.

They are very colorful and small (3 1/2 to 4 1/2 inches adult size). :)

It's the greens on the carapace that I like. Is that pyrimiding or natural growth? Thanks for the pictures.
