I was actually asking a similar question myself. It's all going to boil down to the inspection for me. I want to know how they were being kept and what they look like health wise. I've heard it really depends on the store you're at.

Some things I'm going to look at:

Humidity levels/Temps
Diet
Shell growth/pyramiding
General health (is it active, skittish, does it retract its feet if touched)
Obvious signs of illness (abscesses, RI, watery eyes, eye issues etc)

I'm also planning on asking when it was last checked for parasites, etc. and if there is a vet record available.

Any other things I should be looking out for? If I'm lucky maybe it'll produce a stool that I can look at.

I have two already.. One male one female... Would like a third.. Preferably female.... My two i have now are both from petco last year.. There
Perfecty healthy and active...i have plenty of room outside.. Do you think a 6x3foot tortoise table is big enough for the winter?

For $55, the main questions I would ask is if it is feeding regularly. I can deal with everything else.

6x3 is a bit snug for three adults, but fine for younger ones, and would be OK for a while over winter in either case... although I would try to find a way to let them stretch their legs a couple times a week.

They're normally $110. I think they put all their reptiles half off a number of times throughout the year to encourage people to buy them and then buy all the supplies attached to them.

As many will attest RF's don't seem to fight as much as other species do.
