Hi all -
This is a follow up to my other post ("To hibernate or not") - I took photos of Yuri's shell abrasions so you experienced tort keepers could take a look.
The fact that the abrasions are uniform got me thinking he scraped himself (as opposed to developing Shell Rot), and I think I know how and where he did it. I wish I thought of it before - I would have closed off the area entirely - I didn't know that each time he squeezed through the "tunnel" (see the photos), he was damaging his shell. I feel so bad for letting it happen
I am still taking him to the vet next week, and in the meantime, keeping him in a warm indoor enclosure in the mornings (we have coastal fog in the AM this time of year) and then I put him outside when the sun finally arrives.
Even after a few days of applying Silvadene, the scrapes are already healing. The scrapes are dry. I am hopeful he can hibernate - he does love his pink ferret hut ...
