Sorry for the bad pictures. This is podocnemis expansa in the aquarium tunnel at the California Academy of Sciences in San Francisco. Not a very colorful species, but the largest of the sidenecks. This one was probably 18"-24".

I tried to get a job there for so many years. Then they had a temporary place downtown while the GG park location was rebuilt. I think most all the established animal people were thrown away. It was at one time pretty cutting edge, but either hobbyists have out grown them or they have fallen way behind.

Great images Kevin. Thanks for sharing.

Interesting. I have discovered that it is common for 'animal people' at public zoos and aquaria to be low paid, overworked and they eventually become disillusioned.
I still love this image...how cool it would be to maintain such an exhibit.

That's why I work in BioPharma now, overworked, disillusioned, but well paid.

Love expansa! I was asked if I wanted them on my CBW permit when I was getting it. I was like, "uh, no thanks." No need being involved with species that I could never provide for adequately!
