For almost a year i thought my tortoise was a Russian, until a recent photo o posted of him in a Russian forum struck controversy! They all believe he is a Hermann's! I flipped through photos on this Hermann's forum and it seems that all of you were correct! All the little torts in this thread look just like Carroll!

Actually quick question for you...when is a good age to put hatchlings back with mum and dad?

Never, the risk of fighting over territory and the big tortoises hurting or killing the small ones is too high. Unless you have a really huge enclosure. But even then you should divide it and keep the generations and sexes separate, to avoid incest.

Here's a picture of my little guy the I'm calling Siggy.

He was hatched early this summer and is growing nicely.

Wait until they're at least 4" long, so you can sex them, because you really don't want the adult male to "whoop up" on the smaller males, and he just might. The younger males are now old enough to be rehomed, as are the younger females, unless you want to keep them for breeding stock.

And "incest" really isn't a biological issue for most breeders, but if you're uncomfortable with the idea, as some may be, you could swap your young females with other hobbyists for their young females, thus spreading the gene pool even wider.

Keep in mind how much room your enclosure has to offer, so as to determine how many torts to keep...overpopulation isn't good. You may, of course, build another enclosure or rebuild your present one to be roomier, depending on what's best for you.

Meet Herman, my month old hermanns hatchling who I've had for four days! The other tort pictured is my Russian Doug. I've had him for about a year and my best guess is that he's six.
I love these guys :)
