Just discovered this going on with my tort today... it was not like this last night. He is healthy. Is this just flaked off skin? Thanks so much in advance.wcPxB1U.jpg

Looks like mud. Can you take a dropper or needleless syringe and squirt saline on it to see if you can wash it away?

Unfortunately it's not, I tried that. It is an actual gap/indentation :(

Your tortoise needs some vet care unfortunately. They can prescribe some eye drops, they can trim its beak and toenails as well. If you take a fecal sample they can check for parasites while you're there. The swelling around it's eyes may indicate a respiratory infection in process?

That looks like dry skin to me, but the eyes do seem to be bulging a little. What type of bulb do you use for UVB?

If it’s compact like one of these that could be the cause of the bulging

The solution is to switch it off and replace with tube UVB or use a Mercury Vapour Bulb (MVB) in which case you don’t need the separate basking bulb either.

I agree the beak would benefit from a trim.
