I hear some people talk about the two different kinds of Sulcata, but I don't know what they are.
What are the two names?
And.....
How can I tell what kind my Sulcata is? What is the difference???

Here is a picture if that will help.....

As of right now there are no subspecies of Centrochelys sulcata recognised. :)

There is only one. Geochelone Sulcata. Aka: African Spurred Tortoise (not Spur Thighed).

That seems to be the little dude/dudette that you have!

they two scientific names that you hear Geochelone Sulcata and Centrochelys sulcata are the same creature the scientific community is starting to seporate them from the geochelone genus thus gicing them a new name the "centrochelys sulcata." atleast thats what i make of it

Dan, are they changing the name Geochelone to Centrochelys? What is the
recognised? I don't really know who the 'they' are, but they changed the species name of the RES, Trachemys scripta elegans and the western pond turtle Clemmys marmorata to Actinemys. They keep changing the name and I'll never get it right!!!lol

You can use either Geochelone or Centrochelys for sulcatas right now. They (an international taxonomic review committee) haven't quite decided which one to use right now. The list is in Stells (Kelly's) post in this thread (her last post) http://tortoiseforum.org/thread-4715.html

The change for Sliders to a different genus was long over due. :) It makes much more sense now. I am finally getting used to the changes made to the genus Clemmys and can see the need now.

A few years ago there was a paper published that introduced subspecies to Centrochelys sulcata. No one has accepted the work yet though and from what I can see there isn't enough difference to warrant subspecies.

Ohhh... ok. So I can still classify it as Geochelone Sulcata.
Thank you all so much for the great info

Being a plant person by trade I can tell you precisely what goes on. Most everything of significance has been found and described; so if you are a taxonomist, not much work to do. Other than moan, ***** and complain about how someone else got it wrong. Nothing but job justification. There are clumpers and there are splitters and they will never agree; because if they did, they would all be out of jobs and have no more silly papers to publish. LMAO this really is true folks! Best wishes to all Douglas

LOL, that sounds like a wonderful idea. ;)

I'm still trying to figure out how to pronounce the words "Geochelone or Centrochelys" correctly. I think that I'm saying them wrong. :(
