Over the years I've had to 'give-up' several of my "favorites".. since I can't keep them all. Most...... I can only hope they have been cared for properly. A couple have gone and returned.

The previous owner could not keep her.. so he contacted me. It sure would be nice if all were that considerate and caring!

He did a fantastic job of caring for her.

NOTE.. SHOWN HERE IS WHAT "OVER-FEEDING" LOOKS LIKE:

As you can see by the dates in the pics.. it doesn't take long for changes. It takes an on-going effort to maintain & duplicate how they live in the wild.

MissX109b.jpg

MissX109.jpg

Even tho' it may be slight.. the space between the scutes is not 'normal'. The humidity has been in order.. the feeding has been a little too much - typical of what happens when 'confined' indoors!

THAT is an absolutely gorgeous tortoise!

And as for wishing that more owners cared enough to contact the breeder when they could no longer care for a pet, I wish more BREEDERS were willing to take back animals that they bred. THAT is caring, if you ask me ;)

The young man that acquired this one called him "Double-Dots" .. you'll see why..

And now that 'smooth' growth.. from keeping them "sprayed" daily - @ 10 months old -

Thanks Shawn. I've basically raised them the total opposite of what the so-called redfoot caresheets on the web and other 'forums' have stated. AND I have a breeder/mentor that goes back to the early 80's!

Thanks TerryO and Mark (madkins).

Yes I am very blessed to have the blood-lines that produce these colors/patterns!

And more important to have the mentor ( cdmay ) and inspiration of "My Navigator" - http://www.turtletary.com/about.htm - to develop a system that has created the results on this thread. Without Them it would not have happened.

One thing about G. carbonaria.. AKA Redfoot tortoise.. is that you never know how big they will get - when?

All of Pat's are within a year or so of "hatch-dates".. and she was sure she had over-fed this one.. { which is soooooo easy to do } -

Maybe I can find a 'hatchling' pic of this one.

Thank you again Kristina!

I do confess.. there are a few that I would want back for the color/pattern blood-line!

So I guess the difference is breeding strictly for "old-dead-presidents" [ which I do make a profit.. I think I had a net of $800 in '07 ].. and trying to make it better/easier for someone new to tortoise keeping.

It would be great if more would keep in touch and show how they've grown over the years. They meant well I'm sure.

One from early summer '07 - ( couple months? old ) -

And at about 16 months old - Madkins007 received this little guy -

The ONLY purpose of this thread is to demonstrate how important ambient/hide humidity is. All of the ones that I started and raised up were "sprayed-until-they-dripped" days after they came out of the egg!

Thanks for the pics 'gummy'.. the colors are fantastic - however Phoenix was not cared for with enough humidity when he got to his 1st owner { you see what he looked like when he left here }; hence the bumpy carapace now. Diet has very little if anything to do with the "pyramiding"! At least 'our' diet anyway.

Ya gotta love those colors...

NERD

BTW.. when looking at the 'overhead' it looks like a little "over-feeding" has occured. Phoenix might need to go on a 'diet'.. skip a meal every couple days at least.

No problem Terry.

The other 3 redfoots the previous owner had did have nice shells and were kept in the same humid conditions. The previous owner admitted to overfeeding and would feed them a few times a day. But then again, what people say doesn't always mean that is what they do.
