I put it in as wet as it is from the water used to break up the blocks. If it's too wet, it dries quickly.

How much water to dump and how often varies tremendously with each enclosure, and even with the same enclosure in different seasons and weather. You have to go by feel.

There is no harm in using orchid bark, but if you are going to do that, I would just skip the coir and use all orchid bark.Its not too big/chunky for them and retains

It's not too chunky for them (I'm using the small kind but the baby is so small!) and retains water just as well?

I use orchid bark for my hatchling Burmese stars every year. Its not too chunky and it retains water very well.
