I got my tortoise a reptisun 5.0 t5 (the tube kinds). I am just wondering if this was the right bulb to purchase. Should I have gotten a 10.0 instead of a 5.0?
I believe I read somewhere that Redfoots don't need a strong UVB light. But I'm sure in due time an experienced Redfoot person will help you. What are you using for heat?
You can use either T5 5.0 or 10.0.
The difference will be the distance at which they will be used to provide same UVB. For Reed foot and forest species place 5.0 at 12-15" distance and 10.0 at 18-20" distance. Diffusing the bright light with plants is recommended as forest tortoises may avoid bright light as T5. Other factor to consider is how much of the habitats area does the UVB tube cover. Small area coverage calls for the tube at closer distance. Large coverage puts the bulb at higher distance.
Just want to clarify that this is T5HO fixture and tube. T8 tubes need to be positioned much much closer to provide any beneficial UVB levels.
