Hi guys,

For 3,5 years I've been the owner of a Russian tortoise, named Tobi. However, after these years I'm planning to say farewell to my little buddy. He will get a new home at the Tortoise & Turtle Center, a place where these animals can get a new home when the owner can't take care of them anymore. In my case I'm really unsure if I'm capable to give the care he needs (mainly because of work and private situation). During these years I've experienced lots of stressfull moments with him: the time when he got RI (cured thank god), when he ran away from home (my brother found him at the neighbours) and when his health got worse after that stupid vet visit (thanks to TF he got better). To this day I'm still worried about his well being and doubtfull if I'm the right care taker for him.

Few weeks ago I took him to the vet again (a good one this time) for his calcium defficiency. He got better again, but now he's dealing with eye problems (not sure because of new MVB or coco coir in his eyes). It was at this point I decided to give Tobi away to a better care taker. With lots of pain in my heart I made an appointment this saturday to give my tortoise away, knowing it is better for both of us.

However, after these stressfull moments I really had a lovely and great time with Tobi. I got him when he was a little sprout, and he has grew so much since then. I have so much great memories about him. I remember when I got home from work, and my tortoise was sleeping in the substrate with his head sticking out. I walked past his enclosure, he slowly opened his eyes, looked at me and came out his hole to greet me. That was amazing!

He's now sleeping at his outdoor enclosure. Tomorow I'm gonna hand feed him and give him his eye drops, and saturday I'm gonna spend the last hours with him before I say farewell to him after these years. I can ensure I wont be able to hold my tears when I say good bye to my little friend this week, but also happy that he's gotten a better home...

So very sorry and sad to hear this for you and Tobi.
But very brave of you to give him up if you really don't think you can look after him.
Do you not know anyone who could give him a good home where you could still see him?
Make sure the centre is a good one who will look after him and after his medical needs properly.
Take care.

So sorry to hear this. It would be nice if you could visit him. He is lucky to have spent years with a caring owner who wants to do what is best for his shelled friend. Take care and God bless you.

Sorry you guys are parting ways, I think it is really good that you are doing what you think is best for your little friend. Good luck to both of you.

You and Tobi have been through a lot together. I can only imagine how difficult it will be to give him up.

Take care.

I would suggest re-homing him with someone here, I mean you know the quality of care these people give...not to mention you would make a friend and still be able to keep tabs on him. Rosemary, Wellington, jay, and plenty others are master care givers.

I don't envy the goodbye, that would cut me really deep.

I'm sorry that you and Tobi will be parting, but am glad you have found a good home in a specialist center. It is a very hard decision to make so please accept my electronic hugs and best wishes for the future for both you and Tobi :)
