Hi, this is probably a really stupid question but we are trying to make our tortoise house more interesting now it is cooler and he can't get outside. Can I just ask if anyone knows, does spagnum moss "take" into substrate (soil and sand) or does it just sit on the top? Also his toe nails are really long. I asume cos he has just ambled around the garden on grass and soil and his indoor house is just substrate, a bit of straw and now some moss. Rocks or ok to put a gravel area for him to negotiate to reach his food or is this a non no? Any help gratefully received so we have a happy, stimulated pet. Thanks :)

Re: RE: spagnum moss

sphagnum moss sits on top of the substrate though you could mix it in. PEAT moss just mixes in.

and some flat or larger rocks are perfect around the food and water dish, i find less substrate gets in that way. some tortoises eat the smaller rocks and they're just harder to clean messes out of :p
