Are asking about aquarium size or a tub or stock tank type enclosure?

For an aquarium I would want a 75 gal tank as a minimum for an adult. That has an 18" x 48" footprint, so that would be a good size that would work. Of course bigger is better, but a spotted adult would do well in that size.

Be sure to set the tank up for a spotted properly. They love lots of plants to hang in and hide in. They need ways to be able to easily climb to the surface as opposed to just swimming up. I use a few fake plant garlands that I cut to about 2 foot lengths. Anchor one end to a tile or stone and let the other end float up. This gives a few nice columns of plant that they use to half swim, half climb to the surface. They rest floating the plant at the surface.
