What is the proper way to pick up a tortoise? I usually do the sides like a closed book but I don't know the proper way
A very warm welcome to the forum! :tort:

With BOTH hands, thumbs on his/her shell, and holding him/her with your hands. Take GREAT: torts do NOT like to be picked up. Therefore, please do so carefully and only when necessary.

By the way, what species is your tort? Any pics?;)

I don't s'pose there really is a right way. You want your tortoise to feel as comfortable and safe as you can make it. To this end, I like to place the tortoise either in a small plastic tub or on the palm of my hand.

One hands on each side of the shell, four fingers under each side and thumbs on top if it's too big for one hand.

I personally think it depends on your tort. Most of mine don't care how I pick them up, they just don't stress over it. If yours seems to stress then just be sure his feet are supported.
