My name is Anita, Niti to my friends. 2 Years ago I "inherited" my Grandson's Sulcata tortoise so that makes her about 3 and a half. Georgie is 13 pounds, carapace is 12+ inches long (Yes, I am over feeding her). She is still flat as a pancake underneath, so I believe she's a she. Time will tell. She's a sweetie, but VERY hungry all the time so spring and summer she's fed twice a day and an afternoon snack. We live in SW Florida so she lives on our screened lanai. All the screens have been replaced with nylon pet screen BUT now she's starting to tear through that. :( I would start walking her outside and around the neighborhood but the lawns are all being treated. The undeveloped lots are full of biting red ants. Any advice for a frustrated torti mom?

Could you replace the pet screen with the pvc lattice?

Hi Anita, and welcome to the Forum.

Buy some redwood or cedar 1x12's and put them all around the bottom of the lanai so the tortoise can't contact the screen. If he can't see, he'll probably leave the walls alone.

Thanks! No she'd pull lattice right out. She's already broken our toilet valve piping in the pool bath! Hubby is NOT happy with her. Opaque solid acrillic might work if I silicon it into the screen frames. Will keep trying because I really love her and want to keep her!!
Thanks again!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm thinking opaque acrillic siliconed into the screen frames. I think wood would give her a toe-hold and up & over she would go!
At leastit sounds like I'm on the right track in blocking her sight line. They are SO visual!!
Thanks again!

Hello and welcome. Your tortoise is past the "hang out on the porch" phase of her life. It is time to build a large secure enclosure for her with her own thermostat controlled night box.

Here are some ideas for you:

If you post a pic showing the anal scutes and tail, we can probably sex her for you. And finally, her size is really just right for her age. I have two three year olds that are 12 and 14", so yours is right there.

Thanks Tom - I do agree Georgie is outgrowing our lanai however our restrictive city rules would make an outdoor enclosure very difficult - not impossible but....so I will try walking her outside and try my acrylic panel ideas first. Next step would be a Sanctuary but I really don't want that to happen. Wish me luck! I will take some pics and try to post them this week after she has a BATH - been hanging out in our porch garden. Thanks again for the suggestions, I appreciate it.
