I'm not sure what you're asking but if you mean how to denote gender: 1.2.6 would mean one male, two females, six unknown or juvenile (too early to tell gender). Is that what your question was? Hope that helps.

yeah that's my question so the first 1.0 would be male and 0.1 would be female correct?

Yes, and ascott has helpfully pointed out an existing thread on the forum.

Back to the subject at hand...is everyone agreed that breeding tortoises are sire for the male and dam for the female?

I was just curious.
All other animals could easily be classified as just male or female too, but somehow additional designations make them seem more exciting or interesting.

A "male bovine fight" is not as colorful or dramatic as a "bullfight."
Calling someone a "female bovine" or a "female dog" isn't as colorful or inflammatory as calling someone a "cow" or a "b*tch." :)
A "bull shark" seems more dangerous than a "male shark."
I guess tortoises seem like the Rodney Dangerfields of the animal world: they "don't get no respect!":p

I prefer calling a male a sire and a female a dame. Just my opinion :D

The inescapable descriptor for so many male tortoises is rapist. I'm happy to just use male and female for them when gender identification is needed.

Sorry, not a dame. Or were you making a joke? Jokes are always welcome in my house but the reason for the sire and dam designation is that is how tortoises are officially listed in zoological and professional SSP (Species Survival Plan) studbooks.
There is no other designation differentiating male and female tortoises that I have ever heard of.
