Abstract:

Since the 1990s, there have appeared numerous articles in scholarly journals and the popular press that deny the risks posed by non-native species and claim that the field of invasion biology is biased, uninformative and pseudoscientific. Unlike normal scientific debates, which are evidence based, this discourse typically uses rhetorical arguments to disregard, misrepresent or reject evidence in attempt to cast doubt on the scientific consensus that species introductions pose significant risks to biodiversity and ecosystems; thus, it is similar to the denialism that has affected climate science and medical science. Invasive species denialism, like science denialism in general, is typically expressed in forums where it avoids expert peer review. Denialist articles have increased exponentially over the past three decades, most notably in the mainstream popular press. This burgeoning phenomenon could impede development and implementation of policies designed to safeguard against invasive species spread and impact.

Ahhh… Fun and games in the information age.

Anyone can find "scientific studies" to back up any point of view they care to subscribe to nowadays. Many of the original "global warming" scientist have now openly admitted fraud. More to the point, we've seen examples of catastrophe caused by invasive species like the cane toad in Australia for example, and other times the threat is over-exaggerated like the pythons in south FL.

Hard to know who to trust or who to believe about anything anymore. The MSM is a bunch of stone cold liars with an agenda. We've all known that the majority of the politicians on BOTH sides of the aisle are liars for a long time. Then you have individuals on the internet, each selling their own point of view and finding "evidence" to support it. Meanwhile public policy and new laws are now formed more by feelings than facts… We are headed for big problems if we don't find a way to fix these things.

And then there’s that Stephen Hawking guy that realized the theories he was wanting to prove and helped us to understand what we didn’t.
