The nail like tail

Saw on another page that hermanns with this nail like bit on the tip of the tail are male but I was sure it was just a part of all hermanns. Someone clear this up for me please?

This claw is actually represented in more than just testudo hermanni. It has been noted to be present on female Herman's as well males. The claw occurs in Platynota, Kinixys Belliana Belliana, kinxixys zombensis, Kinixys domergueyi, Kinixys erosa, indotestudo elongata.

I think the spur-on-the-end-of-the-tail thing must be an old wives tale, because years ago, that's what I heard too. I postulated about it a while back on the Forum, and was told in no uncertain terms, that I was wrong, and that both males and females have a spur.
