RE: Weak hind legs

Hi ashay99:

Welcome to the Tortoise Forum!!

May we know your name and where you are?

Your tortoise's problem sounds like something that needs to be addressed in person by a vet. He sounds pretty sick and we would be doing him a disservice to try to diagnose over the 'net. Please take him to the vet ASAP.

I agree with emysemys. We could guess, but don't want to guess wrong and make things worse.

Please take your tort to a vet as soon as possible.

Poor thing. Definitely take it to the vet to see if it has any illnesses.

RE: Weak hind legs

He could be suffering from an impaction, a bladder stone, or severe metabolic bone disease, just to name a few. We cannot diagnose something this serious online. He needs a vet very very soon.

RE: Weak hind legs

That is a rough spot to be in....

How old is your tortoise? How long have you had your tortoise? Is your tortoise a wild caught tortoise or did you purchase a captive tortoise? Is your tortoise eating still? What are you feeding him currently? What are your temperatures in his enclosure? Do you soak your tortoise on a regular basis?

Your tortoise sounds as though he is in a serious way...please keep trying to find a reptile vet.....please give some information about the care you are offering...maybe we can offer up some help to make your tortoise more comfortable until you find a vet....

Please provide a picture of your tortoise and also a picture of your enclosure to begin with ...:D

A Land Far Away...
Let's start with some basic information... how long have you had him? What temps do you keep him at? Do you soak him? Humidity levels? What age is he? What do you feed him? Is he still active and eating?

I merged Ashay99's threads into one because I feel the problem is all related. The not moving back legs and not pooping.

Ashay99, I know you said you don't have a vet, but there's really nothing we can do for you here. This tortoise needs to be seen by a vet.

All you can do is make adjustments to your tortoise's habitat and make sure you are providing everything it needs to be happy and healthy. But I think he really needs professional help, immediately.

Your tort needs to be seen by a vet immediately…I would make sure temperature is correct 80-88F, keep very well hydrated. It sounds like your tortoise’s legs are at the stage of atrophy. The degree to which atrophy and other pathological changes occur in the skeletal muscle of reptilian endotherms under normal metabolic and temperature conditions depends on several factors. They include the
disuse protocol, the duration of disuse, the particular muscle under study( in your tort's case = the hind legs ), the length of the muscle during the period of disuse, and the species studied. All of which can be attributed to the under laying problems you may have elsewhere. Keep us posted and hope it works out for you…
