Top four are a shy little male I helped off the road this morning.

The bottom four are a little female I helped off the road about ten miles further down the road.

I really enjoy helping these lil turts out of the road. I take pictures of every one and determine a sex.

Been thinking about getting some measuring instruments and recording my findings. Would be interesting to compare the stats over time and who knows, possibly run into the same turtles from time to time.946621FC-05CD-4B63-A9CE-F844B0EB78D0.jpeg3E10CDE1-9932-4875-BD4C-F11085AFB4A1.jpeg0CB87126-CDB4-4E5C-91AB-39393145FD20.jpegD93525ED-7803-4B26-9EB7-45FEBBC42F25.jpegCD45CA53-2029-45E0-9B72-91376A4715A9.jpegFBCFA80F-BC46-4EDC-9410-E58B74424363.jpeg39D22BEA-369C-4FC4-99CD-DDE2124CFF7B.jpeg6C944A79-CF6D-4469-B001-CBDBEC700C68.jpeg

The underside of the tail is the only good way to sex them. Probably not easy with the wild ones.

You're so lucky to live where you're able to see wild turtles!

Take a look at the Herpetological Education and Research Project at http://www.naherp.com. Since you already do such a great job of documenting the turtles you encounter, this would be a great place to track and share that data. :)

That website provides extremely useful context to help identify turtles you find walking around (or road rescues). For example, in my area, the ONLY box turtles listed in my county and nearby counties are Gulf Coast box turtles. The pictures in the entries show the range of patterns for this area. So, if I hear of someone local seeing a box turtle, or helping a box turtle cross a road, I'm fairly confident I know what type of box turtle it was. Then I can point them in the right direction if they want to know more.
