My brother who is the green thumb of the family said it was muscadine vine which agrees with Yvonne's guess. They are pretty common in Louisiana. This is just a young plant. The vein pattern on the leaves is identical to wild grapes(muscadine). I guess that explains why they love to eat it as soon as it grows over into their area. Bonus food item! Thanks
I am a little late to the party, but I think what you have is actually heart leaf pepper vine. I am going through the same thing now trying to distinguish between the two(muscadine). I have both growing where I am in Louisiana. The muscadine(vitis rotundifolia) seems to have a smaller leaf that is darker green than the pepper vine(ampelopsis cordata). Both are in the grape family, but muscadine is the same genus also. Both should be edible.
