On July 29 '09 my Brazilian female laid 4 eggs. Tonight one of those little dudes caused an egg to crack.. looks like when a rock hits the windshield and causes that little "spider-lookin" spot on it.. barely visible. He may get thru tonight and take his first breath of air. Time will tell.

How many incubation days is that?

Anxious to see how he looks.. first of this season...

If anyone can do a photo documentation, it's you!

Try to get some sleep when you can, though. ;)

Too late for that Maggie.. too many albums! Thanks anyway...

You always make me work for this.. don't you?!

It was a late July overcast day.. then came the rains and then came the notion that it was time to "nest".

This seems to be quite common.. nesting in mud!

Also note the colors in this trance. Since it was so late in the day ( see the shadows ).. and humid; the old camera didn't know how to focus.

Finally these huge eggs - I added the "B" before placing into the incubator -

And then.. "How many days is this"?.. anybody with an old calendar?.. we have a PIP -

Look real close and you can see how the break 'runs' -

Usually it may take another couple of days until we see any changes in the pip. Then again it could be out of the egg tomorrow!

Will keep the progress posted...

OOOoohhh, great idea, Jordan! ;)

I think Terry needs a brand-new photography project, and this one would have the added benefit of giving all of us here at the forum the thrill of watching a baby tort hatch! I vote more fun for me! :p

Jordan I'm at somewhat of a loss since I'm on the 'old' computer with very limited access to "My Documents".

As I recall that female I acquired in early '05.. and she laid viable eggs within 6-8 months. She has been with only Brazilian males since July '08. So I'm hoping for pure hatchlings from now on. Hope that's what you're asking. [ there are a dozen or so eggs incubating now ]

Patricia my wife opens the convenient store she runs at 6a.. so I got up shortly after she did at 4:30a to check on the egg --- right on schedule -- pics in a few!

Done this 100's of times literally.. pick up the egg at first 'pip' to place into the "nursery" incubator.. feel the baby squirm inside the egg!!!! Still get a rush!!!

ALL RIGHT!!!

The first couple of days are vital after the initial 'pip'. They must be kept very humid.. so I put them into their individual cup with a folded blue papertowel that is saturated with hot water and then another folded one laid on top.. in an incubator at the same temps. These pics were taken early the 2nd day after the initial pip.. right on schedule. In fact look real close and you'll see that this 'pip' is 90 degrees counter-clockwise from the initial pip! -

This little dude spins around inside the egg and hammers additional holes - like a can-opener - until it can then push it open with it's hind legs. Let's see how he does over the next few hours. He might even come out backwards. And since it has been a very long incubation term he shouldn't have too much yolk-sac.. never know however.

Too many 'pips'!!!
