My russian tortoise has been getting growth lines, but the lines along the bridge of her shell are .3 cm. thick, and she is around 4 inches (11 cm.) long. Is this normal, or does this mean I am feeding too much? And I was also wondering if I should supplement a little bit more calcium since she is growing? Thanks ahead of time for help!

Hi Clarice:

Yes, on Russians when you see that thick growth ring around the lower edge of the shell, it usually means the tortoise is getting quite a bit more food than usual.

In my opinion, unless you see distorted growth and uneven-looking shell, it's ok. Just make sure the tortoise is getting the calcium and UVB it needs for healthy shell and bones.
