Can someone please tell me what kind of tortoise I have. He or she just showed up on my front porch about 6 months ago.

It's a box turtle not a tortoise. My guess is a desert box turtle. However wait for an expert

Maybe that’s why he likes the water so much. But he has so many tortoise tendencies

No worries. Better to ask for proper care. Look on the forum for box turtle care. You will learn a lot, I did. I have a desert box turtle too. Mine is under 1 years old. Yours is very nice looking.

The reason why we brought her in is because one of its front toes had all of its claws eaten off looks like may be a cat got her, so we were just trying to do the right thing and she’s very happy now

I'm glad you took/and are taking care of her. Is her foot ok?

Yes it looks like an old wound. You would be proud everywhere we go we take her. We brought her to Lubbock with us this week. My wife had a doctors appointment. We are from Artesia New Mexico and we went to Petsmart and spent $800 on a new terrarium system, so she is well taken care of.

I also bought vitamins and uvb and 150 watt basking bulbs for her plus tons of treats only in moderation of course. I’ve been doing lots of homework

Sounds wonderful. I think it might be girl given the eye color. However post a picture of the tail and plastron (belly) to see if an expert can tell you.

No v at all in the plastron just straight across. Yellow eyes

Can you post a picture? It might be a juvenile, so you can't tell yet. I'm new to desert box turtles too.

@Yvonne G can you tell if it's a boy/girl? It has yellow eyes. My guess is a girl but I am not an expert
