I have been told that the temp gauge I have is useless. Could anyone suggest a semi cheap but good quality temp reader?

I think they are called accurite. They have a range of gauges to choose from and include temp and humidity. I think walmart and home depot carry them.

Yes, Accurite. Just got one at Home Depot for $9.99. Measures temp and humidity as well as records the high and low. It will sit in the enclosure as there is no separate probe.
