That's a desert tortoise, Paula. They're protected by law.

He or she roamed into my fathers back yard.

Did you try to find the tortoise's owner? You can put up fliers on the utility poles in your dad's neighborhood, place an ad on Craigslist and found ads in the paper are free.

Hi there, sorry not getting back to you. Yes, we live in Cali. In the high desert.

I also live in the High Desert, Apple Valley...over by the Marianas.....the reason for all of my questions is, where about do you live in the High Desert? I mean there are some places that this species still roams wild....I am just curious if indeed this guy is wild...I am only asking that because of the shell and the over look of the tortoise???? Sometimes folks near Barstow, Newberry Springs, Fort Irwin, Edwards and near Calico often have them stroll right onto their property and they then swoop em up believing they are lost and need rescuing???? I am not saying this is what happen but I am always just curious in the possible event it may have happened...:D
