Well, I found sone cactus, and I thought my yearling sullies might be able to munch on it! But I cut into it, and its slimey! I was so grossed out. Its called Cactus Nopalitos.. Can they eat it? Its organic. I just don't know if it's safe.
Thanks!
Tiffany

You bought 45 worth of pads? If so leave some on the counter for a few days and plant the cut end about 3" deep... then you can grow your own.

I don't know where you are, but cactus is 87¢ a pound here. So that shows your dedication to your tort! Not nuts at all.

Use scissors to cut it. I got some of the herb scissors that chef people like, with 3 blades. Easy peasy. Or a seen on tee vee slap choppy thingee. And do take some of them and let them harden up, callous, and plant. In containers they do well. : )

Wow that's expensive. They are pretty cheep around here (Seattle). I've bought them at a Hispanic grocery store and they were even cheaper.

Thanks for sharing the cut & grow your own tips!!

I am going to bum you out ... elSuper Market, Wednesday is veggie sale day, usually 3 pounds for 99 cents but on occasion in the summer, 4 lbs for 99. And I still grow my own. It does great out here.

We dont have it readily avalable around these parts either, but there are several online sources. Not sure if they are cheaper than your $9 for 5.
I bought a mazuri/cactus combo pack from Coastal that was pretty reasonable.

They are very good for you, too. Eat up! I believe I have read that they freeze well. Here are some recipes, as well as the health benefits of nopales.

Our tortoises, so wise. They always eat the super foods. : )

:D Okay... so maaaayyyybbbeee I'll cook one up. If they freeze well, then I can just save them for my shelled babies and stick with cabbage and spinach for myself. ;)
