I'm new to this and doing all the research I can to make sure I get the right tortoise for me.It seems to me that the Yellowfoot, although easily available is nowhere near as popular as the Redfoot. I am curious as to why this is. Their care from what I've been able to find seems very similar, dietary needs seem similar although it seem like the Yellowfoot does need a little more protein. Humidity levels are fairly similar. What makes the Redfoot so much more popular the the Yellowfoot?????

they are more readily available and easier to care for.

Is the need of the Yellowfoot for higher humidity what makes it more difficult to keep or the size or diet???

Think it's a mixture if higher humidity and overall higher temps. Also they get bigger. So that makes it tough

I've always been drawn to the yellowfoot as well. But from what I've heard, the redfoot is hardier than the redfoot and can take more "neglect". Though I hate to put it that way.

There is such a lack of information on the Yellowfoot that trying to learn about their care is difficult, 90% of what I have found is for the Redfoot. I like the looks of the Yellowfoot better. It seems like from what I've been able to find that the Yellowfoot likes to stay in the forest more and look for fallen fruits and forest vegetation while the Redfoot will roam into the grasslands and graze.
With that possibly being the case then it would seem to me that the Yellowfoot would need a different type of lighting system. I'm not sure about this but I would think that the forest would be darker due to the trees and plants while the Redfoot would be more exposed to direct sunlight. Sound right????

I had original considered getting a yellowfoot but I ended up with a redfoot for these reasons:

1) Redfoots are cheaper
2) Redfoots are hardier
3) Redfoots, from what I hear, tend to be more outgoing.

If you go Captive Bred they are just as easy. They will get larger. But mostly they can have a less "favorable" position because they are a lot shyer and don't portray the brilliant colors like a red foot can. I love my yellow foots. They are just like my reds, but a little more shy. They do possess a little more difficulty to adjust in captivity than red foots. At least in the wild caught realm.

Nice pics! I especially like the look of male yellow foots that have a distinctive shape of an hour glass.

Not to get off the subject, but id be curious on the story of that sulcata.

Wow. Are those all considered fullgrown (hard to tell without reference)? Those yellowfoots really are large.

I would be jealous, but as soon as my leopard starts hitting her growth spurt...

PS Poor Sulcata! Is that a rescue?

I am with yah'll....please tell more about that Sulcata!!! Eeeeeek!

I met a yellow foot a month ago..."crusty" who is documented to be at least 117 years old. Most amazing personality on a tortoise ever.

I really like the bigger yellows but I am not a big fan of the "regular" yellows, to each their own. Also yeah I was wondering what in the hell the deal was/is with that Sulcata? Someone had to have neglected that poor thing for quite some time. It's very sad to see but at least it's at a caring home now.

That pet store should be ashamed of themselves for letting that Sulcata get anywhere near to that point (unless someone that neglected it gave it to them). Good on you for looking after it now.

Oh my dog!....

I balled my eyes out when I saw that poor Sulcata. Thank you so much for taking him in. Wow, I have never seen anything so horrible.

Wow, I'm shocked. That human that did that needs to be.....well....I can't even say it
