I need some advice on what to feed my little Hermann tortoise during the cold winter. He had lots of greens from the garden during the summet but these are few and far between in the cold English weather atm, he only eats the red pellets we were told to feed him when we bought him, don't want him to be hungry. Thank you for your help :)

Hi there

A British winter is a challenge for greens (I'm in Kent by the way)

Some suggestions for you:

1. Write a list of the greens you can buy in your local supermarket/market and look them up on The Tortoise Table Plant Database (TTT) for suitability to feed
http://thetortoisetable.org.uk/site/plant_database_14.asp

2. Buy some tortoise-friendly weed seeds from The Shelled Warriors Shop and grow your own on a windowsill.

3. Buy the mixed Komodo pellets. Your tort won't be able to pick out just the red ones. Although nutritionally I don't think there's any difference between the colours. Soak the pellets in water before serving (not juice).

Hi Emma:

That's a beautiful tortoise specimen, and you can be very proud of how well you've grown him to this point, however, I must point out that your little Hermann is actually a Russian (Testudo horsefieldii)

Thank you. I've ordered some seeds
