We are interested in xeriscaping our backyard where we let our Hermann's Tortoise walk around when we are out there and when the weather is nice (he has an indoor enclosure). Our vet said there is a concern for any mulch for ingestion and a blockage. He generally doesn't eat anything outside (not even things he likes when he is in his own house). We have used cypress mulch in his house as his substrate which he never tried to eat (to our knowledge).
Any alternative perspectives on mulch and/or mulch suggestions and/or other xeriscape ideas that are safe for our tortoise?
