Looking to rescue/ adopt a large older tortoise in the Sarasota Fl area. We have the land and time to take care of it
Almost a week with Bowser so far. He's looking happy, healthy and very energetic as usual! Seems like he's really getting used to his home here and I can't wait to have many more adventures with my little Hermann! The funniest thing is when he rolls over balls on his stomach like it's the only way past! Also thanks for the forum welcomes I appreciate the whole community effort in all the educational threads!
Question, I have a zoo med uvb/heat lamp 125w mercury bulb, (hung 12" above my Russian tortoise's shell, in a deep fixture). How much ground is that covering with uvb in his encosure? Anywhere the light casts a shadow? Just the area below in the basking area? I use uvb testing cards to make sure the bulbs are putting out uvb, but I'm not sure how far it's reach is.

Might want to invest in a UVB meter. Many variables to your question. Manufacturer, frosted or not, height, receptacle etc. The highest concentration will be directly under the bulb and taper off fairly much as you get away from directly underneath…but only a UVB can give you the info you want as different manufactured bulbs and age come into play.

Hola all! I have had my testudo tortoise for about 3 months now. Just recently she has been digging under the substrate, which is small pieces of redwood and Timothy Hay...she sleeps all day and seems to eat very little. What can I do to get her to be more active and to make sure she is eating enough? I was thinking of taking her outside on the weekends to get some sun...she has a UV light and heat lamps...HELP?

I would change the substrate to something like coco choir and cypress mulch or fine grade orchid bark. What is the diet?
I recently got a greek tortoise for 100 dollars hes perfectly healthy until now when i asked the woman how old is he she said he was 2 months to 5 years old but i dont trust that he is 12 cm and i was wondering if someone could give me atleast an estimate of his age

That is a huge range of possible ages. At 12 cm. that tortoise is at least a few years old and nowhere near 2 months. If you posted photos of it, it would be easier to tell you hold it it looks.
Serious rain storm last night, as soon as I could see I ran out and brought the 2 biggest plants inside. Broke one big branch off one...damn it! These are the best ever and biggest plants I've grown...

Bummer, if it happens during flower. If still in Veg though take that branch and stick it down in some dirt immediately next time and you've created a clone.
not too sure how to navigate this so I dont know if I am doing this correctly but I would really appreciate if people checked out my fundraiser centered around acquiring russian tortoises, please check it out for more details! (dont feel inclined either! donate only if you are able). https://gofund.me/6f43312b
The small Sulcata you just now thought the bump on it's head looked like an abscess...to me it just looks like a normal Sulcata head, the skin looks rugged and tough, not like an abscess...I think...lol I'm saying this here so I don't embarrass myself in public by saying this...hahaha
Hi Mark!
I was wondering if you're accepting orders for a closed chamber enclosure. I am looking for a good enclosure for a young leopard tortoise and was recommended to talk with you. My email is [email protected], if you have the time to discuss.

Thanks for reading!

I’m sorry but been out of town doing a reptile show in S California I am accepting orders for enclosures. Go to my Facebook page - Smart Tortoise Keeper, all the info and pricing is there. I am back home tomorrow evening so I cannot send my normal response and attachments from my computer right now

email me with any additional questions. My email is on the Facebook page as well

No worries Mark. We actually already talked over email. I discovered your FaceBook page after posting this, and already have the information and plan on placing an order for the 36x48 enclosure this week.

Thanks!
Seeking a foster home 9 months a year for my redfoots - eastern shore of MD. Please contact me asap if interested. Thank you!
Hi, I’m new here and I am so thankful I found this forum. I have two red footed tortoises that I got in January. They haven’t grown very much since I’ve had them but never really thought much of it. They are 9ish months old and still fit in the palm of my hand. They are are very friendly and love getting their chins rubbed. I brought their terrarium outside this weekend for the first time and not sure if they like it

Thanks so much. I did keep a close eye on them but will definitely find an enclosure more suitable for outside. So I was feeding them lettuce and their pellets, that was their normal diet except for occasional strawberry, bell pepper, tomato, cucumber and watermelon.

When I got on this forum they said to change the lettuce to kale. The past week I have given them kale, bell pepper, tomato and their pellets (they only get their pellots every 2-3 days) per breeder.

Unfortunately they are on strike except for their pellets. They won’t touch the other stuff. Are they like dogs, they will eat when they get hungry, or should I be worried. People say they are still pretty small for 9 months old, but I can’t make them eat 🤦🏼‍♀️ 🤷🏼‍♀️.
hi! someone recommended you for some tort food for my Russian, to help with variety during the winter months... I would love to hear what you offer!

@TexMexEd check out one of the subforums and post your picture there, someone should be able to help.
Ok, if there are any puter techies out there, I need a bit of help. It USED to be all I had to do to get pix from my iPhone to my puter was just tether and options would appear. It was easy.

How is it done now? I have 400 pix on my phone. I took pix of my turtz today and wanted to put together a little video for y'all.

I cannot find a 'way' to get them to my puter. HELP!

Yvonne...thank you. I've just acquired a new photo program. Way fancy and over my head, with lots of options. For me, this translates to doing homework to figure it all out. Sounds like a good fall/winter project. Maybe by spring, when the turtles return, I will have learned enough to produce a video for you guys about those TurtzInMyYard....cheers
Hi everyone doing a little reading cannot find correct answer would like to know on Herman’s turtle Eastern on if giving them a bath before bed will be OK for them
Hi Tom, can one use castor oil instead of mineral oil for a constipated Sulcata? Thanks!
Tom
Tom
I have no experience with castor oil, so I don't have an answer for you. Mineral oil is fine.
