Thanks Epps, I've read through just about every coconut oil thread on the forum. They're a great resource. Two years in and no sign of buildup with Walter's current bathing and coconut application schedule. I'm personally not comfortable using any soaps or shampoos with him - warm water and a...
Sandy's new growth looks great! I use coconut oil with Walter. I apply it after his bath (once every 1-2 weeks), give him some food while it absorbs for a few minutes, and then wipe off the excess with paper towel. I don't wash it off as it absorbs well and the paper towel does the rest.
I use Excel and update it once a week with weight and shell growth (measured each Friday morning pre-bath and breakfast). I create a new sheet for each year. It's simple and not super time consuming. Sometimes I just keep the info in a note taking app on my phone and then add it into Excel at...
Your reply makes me sooooo happy 🥰 Timmy is a lucky dude!
Also, he may never love soaks. That's ok, they're still worth doing. My Russian tortoise hates baths but I'm bigger so 🤷♀️ I find if I give him baths in the morning before he's fully booted up he's a bit more relaxed (unless the water...
Whatever you do, please adjust diet, lighting, and enclosure to prevent the MBD from progressing. This tortoise desperately needs proper UV and a proper diet with sufficient calcium and appropriate temps. If you can share info about the current setup, including UV source, temps (basking and cool...
Those temps are ok for nighttime but definitely sounds too cold for daytime temps, so he's likely slowing down for winter. If you're not going to brumate him, he's going to need more heat and potentially more lighting to keep things brighter during the day.
What are you currently using for UV...
You say "right temps, enclosure, substrate and humidity" but what are they? Folks will need to know more detail.
What are your temps, warm and cool side?
What is your humidity?
What kind of enclosure are you using?
What lighting are you using (UV, basking)?
What are you feeding?
Pics would...
Does his enclosure have a warm side for basking that stays around 35°c? If not, he needs a warmer enclosure to heal and thrive.
25 is fine for the cool side, but it's not warm enough for the warm side. If the whole enclosure is 25, that could be contributing to him not getting better.
The UV a tortoise needs to grow is blocked through by glass and the days are getting shorter, which means less ambient light as well. To keep your tort awake through the winter you need improved lighting (go UV tube, separate flood light for basking, and LED for increased ambient light) and keep...
That's great that he passed two stones!!
What about the temps and lights in the indoor enclosure? Is the warm side staying at 35°C during the day and 25 on the cold side?
How's the lighting situation? Is she in a closed or open enclosure?
It could be that with the seasons changing she's winding down for winter. If you aren't brumating, then adding additional lighting + ensuring stable temps can help. What UV source are you using and when was it last replaced...
22°c during the day would be too cold, but around 20 is fine for nighttime. Given that Danny is struggling, it will be important for him to have consistent temps during the day. You want 35ish under his basking light and 25 on the cool side, with substrate he can dig into to regulate his temps...
Oh no, please keep us updated. How's Wilma doing? With her care conditions being the same I'm surprised that Danny is struggling so much, poor guy.
How's the temp control in his enclosure?
