We recently lost our beloved sulcata tortoise, “Rigby”. He had a handful of dire health issues. We had him 12 years, since he was a hatchling. We did not realize he was sick, until he was very sick, we “thought” he was just slow to come out of winter mode and possibly experiencing a bought of constipation. We did take him to the University of Illinois and had a CT, feeding tube, IV cath placed, but ultimately his prognosis was very grave and we decided to let him go. We are gutted. We cannot believe he was sick right under our noses and we were so blind. I did not realize that once they reach a specific point in illness, it is very hard to get them to come back around. I am hoping our experience will help educate others and potentially prevent the loss of another beloved pet. Maybe someday another tortoise will need our love and we can offer our love to a rescue. Im sure many on this site have lost a tortoise, the grief is immense. Please go give your torts some love, we miss Riggs fiercely.
