I tried to get her (him?) to come out a little bit, but today was bath day and everyone hates bath day. So, these have a little better lighting. I'll try for a better one tomorrow at breakfast.
So, today I noticed that one of my girls has a tail that is quite a bit longer than my other girl, though a bit shorter than my male. She was the smallest one, but recently started getting growth lines and is now bigger than my male. Can anyone tell me if I have a girl or a boy on my hands?
We haven't had a summer yet for them to play outside, but we do plan on getting a baby pool that they can be in for a couple hours a day once it's not all gross out. I live in an apartment complex right now, so I don't really want to leave them out all day. But hopefully we'll get a house soon...
They're not old enough to breed yet, but that is the plan! I originally was only going to have Dimitri and Marta, but baby Russians are so cute! So, I decided to go big or go home! It's worked out really well! :) As soon as we get some eggs (which won't be for another year probably), I'll make...
I've seen a lot of people introducing their various tortoises, so I figured I'd do the same! :)
My tank is 7 ft. long and 3 ft. wide. There's a 48 inch UVB light in the middle and a basking light at one end. It stays around 85 on the warm side, 70 on the cool. I put in a trash can for...

My mom actually had a water moccasin in her pool once. My step dad is scared to death of snakes and wouldn't go near it to get it out, so I had to use the big net thing on a stick to fish it out and toss it into the woods before anyone would try to kill the poor bugger! I took a picture before I...
Hi! I'm the proud owner/care giver of 4 wonderful Russian tortoises in Ohio. I've had them about 3 months, and it's been an experience already! I hope to learn more by being a part of this forum. :)
How deep do you keep your substrate in your tank? And what kind of substrate is it? I did have a 50/50 mix of coir and sand for a few months, but switched to 75/25 top soil and sand two weeks ago. My russians love the soil, but I think it's harder to clean than the coir and sand. I feel like I'm...
