I have been doing some research for school, and haven’t been able to find anything on why Marginated Tortoises have Flares. Can you guys tell me?

Her carapace 5 inches from front to back. And three inches tall.

Not without a lot of searching and planning.

I have a Marginated Tortoise, she is younger, her flares are just starting to delevop. But we are building a 2' by 4' wood enclosure for her. We can really go bigger right now, but I'm just wondering if it will cause health issues. Its larger than what she has now. This is what it looks like so...
