    I’m no red-foot expert either. But that’s a female!

    Old dudes

Back in the early 70's I started keeping red-footed tortoises. At that time I met Ted Tuchak who also kept red-foots. Ted and I are friends to this day. Anyway, by around 1977 or 78 we had put some of our respective adults together with the hopes of breeding them. Ted had a couple of beautiful...

    Bolivian Cherry head tortoise questions

I don't know if it's mentioned before, but we know have a wonderful tool to help figure out what red-footed tortoises from various localities actually look like. Inaturalist.org provides countless images of flora and fauna from their native ranges. If you enter 'red-footed tortoise' in the...

    Redfoot Hypomelanistic, Leucistic and Translucent?

It is a simple thing to resolve. Show the parents. Despite its somewhat pale color the neonate in the photo looks like a Testudo, likely a Testudo hermanni.

Um, is that a red-footed tortoise? The prominent nuchal scute says no. Do you have images of the parents?

Assessing body condition in African helmeted turtle

Looks really healthy. Nice weigh but not overly fat. I thought female on your original thread, but not sure now. Can be difficult from photos alone. Regardless, Lazarus is a superb specimen!

Hybrid or just some mutation …..

Does indeed look like a possible hybrid. The radiata X carbonaria has been done before.

New African side neck in outdoor pond

Guppies are fine. Native Gambusia are even better. Avoid goldfish, rosy reds, bait shop minnows and the like.

New African side neck in outdoor pond

Blowing chunks of mealworms is common. They are mostly shell. Cooked shrimp or lean chicken will result in a spoiled sideneck.;)

New African side neck in outdoor pond

Nice photos, thanks. They help enormously. Pelomedusa subrufra for sure. No doubt. Flawless specimen too! Looks like a female. Could be a young male but I doubt it. See the website Pelomedusa.com The site hasn't been updated in some time but it is a great resource. You have found a gem of a...

New African side neck in outdoor pond

Way to go wendigo! Happy that you saved Lazarus from the box pet store. If you didn't know already he/she appears to be a Pelomedusa subrufra or African helmeted turtle. They are side-necks for sure. A good photo of the plastron and tail could help confirm identity and gender. Don't let that...

Can I keep 1 male red cheeked with 2-3 female spotted turtles.

It was a good question to ask. Wish more folks would ask first before learning the hard way.
