A new mum to the tortoise world

    Hey Emma, I love your tort :) I have a spur-thighed too :)

The big question from friends and family

has your tort learned that the glass is a wall? with the people I know who had glass-walls on their enclosures, the torts never understood why they couldn't get past the invisible barrier and got confused and frustrated :(

Well thanks :) Temperature is a thing of course :) We never do any apartment-wandering outside of high-summer :)

I appreciate all the advice, I do. Don't get me wrong. And nobody learns without it. :) I just don't like being misquoted. I NEVER pick my tortoise up to take it places. If it goes someplace, it goes on its own. It's not a stuffed animal. That's basics. That's the point of having a door I can...

And like I said... it doesn't "live" in my apartment. It lives in a 3x1,4m indoor enclosure with soil and plants and heating and light like it is supposed to. I posted a picture on the first page. What I said is, that under supervision, it is sometimes allowed to leave the enclosure and walk...

I won't deprive it of having an outdoor enclosure because there is dirt in the garden? Nature has dirt, fact. I have it checked on every three months by a toirtoise-specializing vet to make sure it's developing fine and we're keeping it properly. He is aware of all the circumstances and changes...

Well not the entire apartment, that would be too dangerous. But it has a door in the enclosure that I can open when I'm home, so that it can walk through my room to the balcony and enjoy fresh air and the sun. I only open it when the temperature is right obviously, both in-door and out-door...

Well sounds great. For my part I think I wouldn't want to do any of that and then rebuild whenever I move... Also I hate keeping my tort in its enclosure all the time, I want it to be able to move through the whole apartment and balcony if it wants to... more space :)

Nobody ever is 100% prepared, I'm sure he'll turn your world upside down either way but it'll be great and worth it :) You'll be fine, I'm sure!

Oh hey, nice to meet you :) Cuoras are beautiful, I know... <3 I never had the chance to have more that one tort, I don't have the room... but it's fine, I'm very happy with the one I have, I can think about more pets once I know I won't move around too much anymore ;)

And obviously, yes, it really is a frickin' dinosaur after all.

Hey Yvonne, thanks :) @FLINTUS, sadly, I guess you're right. Especially when it comes to urban tortoise-keeping people seem to struggle a lot or not inform themselves very well... :/ But, hopefully, if Germany is indeed so well-prepared, maybe I can help some if someone has questions.
