    Fishing for aquarium fish

It’s awesome that you are taking these cichlids out of the waters they don’t belong! I wondered how jags and peacocks would disrupt the naturally balanced food chain in those areas since they are so predatory. Awesome fish to keep but they get so big, I’m surprised that fish stores are still...

Will be off list for a time

So sorry to hear this Karen. How truly devastating. You and your family will be in our thoughts and prayers. [emoji27][emoji1317]

Infuriating sale ads for sulcata torts

I try and be nice to get some information and ask if they’d like them to be rehomed with a knowledgeable care taker. I am not “looking” for rescues but it’s in my nature to try and help animals out of bad situations. I have enough temporary housing space and quarantine, to save and re-home when...

    Legs skin turning brown?

I’d stop scrubbing him. Torts don’t need to be clean. Dirt leave a nice protective layer; when torts are in the wild, dirt provides layers of minerals and moisture. No one scrubs the dirt off them.....just rain and the occasional soaks they discover. His skin scales look just fine.

Infuriating sale ads for sulcata torts

Hello, I am wondering.... Am I the only one who checks Craigslist for torts? Then gets angry at their living conditions? Here’s a few, I thought I’d share. If this is deemed some sort of shaming, I apologize in advance and will remove! I just needed to ask if ya’ll feel the same when you see...

Headed to Dallas Texas. Any tortoises looking for homes?

Hello and welcome! I think that if you had made this post after you were an established member, Karen would not have sounded as concerned. We all feel the same and we’re glad that the veterans of this group always come forward for the purposes of the torts best interests. The information on the...

    Pneumonia

The reason the vet advised against humidity right now is bc your tort needs to dry out his lungs. For only that reason. I agree with that, it’s necessary for rehabbing your tort. When he’s better then yes, mist enclosure and keep humidity up. First thing to note is that heat is most important...

    Opo going to vet.

In just 3 years, I’ve seen 7 cases where someone brought their tort to the vet and after vitamin shots, they’ve died. That’s a very high number! Just be careful with what you allow. Vets are good for diagnosing and making sure your tort thrives but injections are very rarely needed. Antibiotic...

Adverse reaction to coco coir & topsoil mixture

Hi, I didn’t realize there was a response.... No this is definitely not my yearling in the picture. I think we’d have bigger issues if that was the case!! He was a hatchling, in this photo. I know all about the importance of quarantine; however they are kept separate regardless of age. Two...

Adverse reaction to coco coir & topsoil mixture

Hi Tammy, You’ll notice in my OP that this bark is what I’ve been using where there’s been a reaction. You have a lot of questions and none of them really pertain to my original question and would require a lot of detail to answer. I’m not sure why I would need a vet at this point? There’s...

Adverse reaction to coco coir & topsoil mixture

Hi! It’s not pesticide bc I’ve only used organic components but that was a great suggestion!

Is HE or isn't SHE? The confusion continues

I see the confusion!! The concave is surely male but the tail looks female. So wait, if the tort knows his/her sex but the owner does not....What’s the proper term for this type of gender confusion? [emoji23] ;) :)

    Tortoise Cruelty on Pintrest

I can see why you’d see this and gasp! It’s appears a bit inhumane at first glance. I’d never hibernate torts like this..... They should be in separate containers with bottoms so their extremities aren’t dangling through the shelf grates! The door of a fridge is isn’t exactly ideal either...

    What species is she?

I was going to say she/he is an Eastern box turtle. The pattern on the shell appears Eastern to me. Some are saying three-toed. They are a similar species. Some have bred them and you get hybrids of both. Without seeing him/her completely in the picture (full shell, carpace, feet) it’s hard to...

    Backwater reptiles exposed.

Those are very valid points. I have not read each of the good or the bad reviews. I was trying to be clear of judgement or a biased opinion to be fair. However, you’re absolutely right. Shipping a new animal to me at my cost doesn’t really make up for what’s already done to that animal (and...
