    Soil

I'm also in BC and for years I had a really hard time finding soil with no additives. I finally found these big bags of peat moss at home depot, the ingredients list only Canadian sphagnum peat moss. Its around $8.99 for a big bale and once moistened a bit I have found it to be a really good...

    BIT OF A CHANGE

I like the changes you made to Marvin's enclosure, but I would have stuck with your original plan to change the substrate to something you can moisten and that Marvin can dig in. My Russian is 6yrs old now and from the time he was 2 months old I have had deep substrate that I kept moist so he...

    What was your first tortoise?

My first tortoise was my Russian, I named him Tortington but have pretty much called him Torty ever since. I got him from a breeder in Ontario and had him shipped to me in BC which was pretty scary as I was terrified I was going to open the box and find him unwell. I still have him, he was 2...

    Newbie Supply List

Hi, I have two Hermanns, one I came to me when he was around 2 years old and my second I got as a hatchling. As a basking bulb I use the ZooMed 100w bulb for all my torts, I usually get the two pack when they are on sale at Petsmart. I like the idea of the Powersun MVB, however I had a bad...

    Outdoor enclosure

I picked one of these up as well, quite a good deal for two planters and you can configure them in different ways. I'm already thinking of picking up another box as they are quite nice and a good size.

    Substrate

Hi, I used to use Jungle Mix which was a mix of fir and sphagnum peat moss- I really liked it as it helped with humidity and didn't have any stingy bits like the coco coir. However, it was very expensive so when my number of torts increased I had to find a more affordable option. Now I use...

    Flipping

Hi, I have two Hermann's torts and my youngest who is 6 months old and just recently started flipping. I had never seen any behaviour that made me think he would flip so when I found him flipped over after coming home from shopping it was quite scary as I didn't know how long he had been...

@Oxalis Oh yeah, he was like a model always turning towards the camera, which is really like his personality, he is the sweetest tortoise. I figured it was fitting that my Russian Torty with the green bow wouldn't come out of his shell, he really never wants anything to do with me unless I'm...

    New Hermann's hatchling

Thanks so much for the info, I'm glad to hear that it is only cosmetic as he seems healthy otherwise.

    New Hermann's hatchling

Yeah, the pet store didn't seem very knowledgable about tortoises, which didnt really surprise me at all. Thanks, I thought the acute looked strange, I've seen spit scutes before but not one like this. I guess I'll have to see how it is as he grows.
