    They are up!

I am not sure if the torts will remain out of brumation yet at this time. They can remain in their burrows as they wish with the upcoming weather. I am going to not feed them any wet food yet though in case they need more time during a cold spell. They have grass and water.

    They are up!

I bet you are so happy they are up. It is a little earlier then usual. Usually my male wakes up mid March and female a couple weeks after but today was to beautiful of a day for them to stay asleep. They both came out and got some sun for the first time since late October. I kept my distance as...

    October 1st here already.

Another Desert Tortoise season is wrapping up and what a great year for the torts i take care of. The manzanitas, and other natives in their enclosures are growing rally well. They may have a couple shrubs to hide under in a year or two even though for now they cool off in their underground...

    Classic cars, trucks and motorcycles

Matchless is British Iron, like Norton, made in London. Britain had hundreds of motorcycle companies pre and post World War 2 until the 1960s. I think Matchless still exists today, making scooters in India.

    Honey to treat tortoise injuries

The honey treatment on outdoor treatment may cause too many problems. It is something to put in the toolbox though. As far as beekeeping goes I am overwintering three strong colonies. I want to take just a small split of capped brood and the queen and put in a nuc from each colony. Then push...

    Honey to treat tortoise injuries

I ran across some info on honey (and wax) being used to treat sea turtles that were injured, there are many articles about it (i think about the same turtles mostly). As a beekeeper and tortoise keeper this really sparked some interest with me. There was a great thread about it here back in 2011...

Waiting for the Food God - share your pics

This female DT is usually very shy. She prefers to be left alone in her territory and if I want to watch her eat I need to feed while she is out or spend five to ten minutes coaxing her, at least that was before I grew some desert globe mallow. She will come running now and will go as far as...

Lovely reply. Acton is a juniper woodland as close to the mojave desert without being in it. I think that the Mojave desert literally is bordering the town I'm in. My Step Dad lived in this town as a child and has told me back in the 60s he saw wild desert tortoises in Acton. They were naturally...

    October 1st here already.

The burrows are completely separate. The tortoises have no access to each other under or above ground. They will will not meet again if i can help it. I like that they are close together however, they are physically just a foot apart but have two 2x8 and a little dirt separating them while they...
