    Week old baby Russian Tortoises

Babies just eat, rest, and sleep when darkness comes. So happy they all seem to be doing so well. Moving to an enclosed home on Thursday morning. Still tweaking temps. So nerve racking.

    Russian Tortoise leaf litter

I’m currently using organic dried magnolia leaves and fresh hibiscus. I don’t use a lot but the little ones like to hide under them and some of the bigger ones nibble. Just something interesting besides the more traditional substrates.

    Russian Tortoise leaf litter

Hi - I'm wondering what type of tree leaves I can use as litter for my Russian Tortoises. So much conflicting information. We have a London Plane Tree (type of Sycamore) and non-fruit bearing Crabapple - are those leaves safe?

    Week old baby Russian Tortoises

Thank you! I hatched one egg almost two years ago and incubated another fertile egg last summer, but sadly that embryo didn't make it. This was my third time incubating and all of the eggs were fertile and hatched beautifully. Four is a lot though. I'll keep them until they're one(ish) and...

    Week old baby Russian Tortoises

Thought I'd share some pics of the four new Russian Tortoise babies that hatched Oct 9-11. They're still in the incubator while I get their first enclosure stabilized. Eating well and active!

Thank you! Soaking went well. Does the brooder box have to be covered? And, can I use those very large (cute for size) plantain leaves to line the bottom of the brooder box? Thanks, again.

Hi again, Tom -- when should I first soak this baby tortoise after it's fully hatched? Should I wait until yolk sac is fully absorbed or should I soak right away? And for how long? Thank you!

    Hatchling habitat - Russian tortoises.

Thank you for the information. Couple more questions - can you use banana leaves to line the bottom of the brooder box? And, does the brooder box have to be covered?

    Hatchling habitat - Russian tortoises.

I have four fertile Russian tortoise eggs @ 60 days and expect them to start hatching any day now. My question is whether the hatchlings can all be in the same habitat once they're out of the brooder box which I leave in the incubator for approximately 10 days. I don't have room for four...

    Egg day 80 in incubator.

If there are still viens showing when candling, can the embryo be dead? Doesn’t appear to be much development.

    Egg day 80 in incubator.

Yes, I will wait. I'm still seeing veins and the egg is dark at certain angles when candling and there's an air bubble, I'm just surprised it's taking this long when my last fertile egg starting pipping at 68 days.
