Hi Megan; Welcome to the forum. I think Russians are a great choice for a first tort. This is the perfect place to find all the info you will need to care for one properly(diet,heating,lighting,ect.)

There is a Jared and I am Jeremy. Jared posted the same question twice? I live near Ottawa in Canada. I have 4 young Leopard torts, 3 young Indian stars, 1.1 Spiders(P.a.brygooi), lots of snakes and a dog.

I wouldn't say any species of tort is easy to take care of. They all have specific requirements(diet,heat,humidity,lighting). I think it is easier to take care of my dog. Just do as much research on any pet BEFORE you buy it.
