We give him organic spring lettuce mix most of the time and occasionally strips of broccoli, red cabbage, and carrot. He hates carrot! He also does not like endive or mustard greens! Silly tortoise!! He is very active and loves to "play" with my son!
I don't have anymore Dandilions right...
I found that wood bark got stuck in my tort's shell behind a leg. It also can give splinters. Check him closely and maybe switch his substrate to ground coconut shell. That helped mine immensely!
Thanks, everyone! I found some collard greens and other things mentioned above at a store about 45 minutes from here. As long as it lasts a good while I should be able to keep him in good supply. It's just too bad I can't find them a little closer!
My tort will not eat the food sprinkled with calcium! Will a Cuttle bone or block be enough? He is getting both red and green kale mixed with other greens, tortoise pellets a shred or two of carrot, and a little broccoli. We are in a small town so getting other greens in the winter is difficult.
I think we learned our lesson! That was close to 20 years ago. We have a nice, deep, wooden box now, but he will be kept inside unless supervised! We are thinking about moving to Arizona so we might get to build a nice big enclosure with a fence and top. We'll see!
Hey everyone, My name is Kimberlie and I live in NW Iowa. We purchased this little guy on Black Friday for my 6 year old son who LOVES turtles and tortoises! He named him "Rush Rush Chrystal" (6yr olds!) We call him "Rush"
We are new to the Russian Tortoise club, but had an Eastern Box...
